Historical Context
Tamiya acrylic paints consist of water-soluble acrylic resins, making them suitable for both brush painting and airbrushing. These paints are compatible with styrene resins, Styrofoam, wood, and typical model plastics. They cover efficiently, flow seamlessly, and allow for easy blending. The paint is washable with plain water before curing.
When airbrushing, use Tamiya thinners, specifically:
- Airbrushing: Items-81020, 81030, 81040, 81520, 87077.
Tamiya paint labels indicate:
- Finishing: Colors with an X designation offer a glossy finish, while XF colors are flat.
- Thinner: Thinning for airbrushing can be accomplished with Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinner.
- Flattering: Items 81521 and 81021 can act as a flattening agent for glossy paints. Mix the gloss with flat base at a ratio of 1:1.
- Thinner: Tamiya Lacquer Thinner can also be used for airbrushing, which results in faster drying and a tougher finish.
- Finishing: For optimal brushing, Tamiya Paint Retarder (item 87114) can achieve a smoother, streak-free finish.
