Historical Context
Tamiya's acrylic paints are crafted from water-soluble acrylic resins, making them suitable for various applications including brush painting and airbrushing. These paints can be applied on styrene resins, Styrofoam, wood, as well as common plastics used in modeling. The paint offers excellent coverage, smooth flow, and easy blending. If needed, the paint can be cleaned off with plain water before it cures.
When using an airbrush, it is important to utilize any of the following Tamiya thinners:
- Tamiya Thinners: Items-81020, 81030, 81040, 81520, 87077.
Tamiya's paint label provides key meanings and practical tips:
- Airbrushing: The paint can be thinned for airbrushing using Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinner.
- Finishing: Items 81521 and 81021 (Tamiya X-21 Flat Base) are recommended as a flattening agent for Tamiya Gloss paints. For optimal results, mix any X-gloss color with flat base at a ratio of 1:1.
- Thinner: Tamiya Lacquer Thinner can also be used for thinning, providing quicker drying times and a more durable finish.
- Flattering: To enhance paint brushing, use Tamiya Paint Retarder (item 87114) for a more refined, brushstroke-free appearance.
