Historical Context
Tamiya acrylic paints are composed of water-soluble acrylic resins, perfect for both brush painting and airbrushing. This paint is suitable for use on styrene resins, Styrofoam, wood, and the standard model plastics. It offers excellent coverage, smooth flow, and easy blending. Before curing, excess paint can be easily removed with plain water.
For airbrushing, it is essential to use any of the following Tamiya thinners:
- Airbrushing: 81020, 81030, 81040, 81520, 87077.
Tamiya paint labels denote specific characteristics and include the following quick tips:
- Finishing: X shaped colors yield a glossy finish, whereas XF colors offer a flat finish.
- Thinner: For airbrushing, paint can be thinned using Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinner.
- Flattering: Items 81521 and 81021 (Tamiya X-21 Flat Base) can serve as a flattening agent when added to Tamiya Gloss bottle paints. Simply mix with any X-gloss color, applying a 1:1 ratio with flat base.
- Additionally, paint can be thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, which results in quicker drying times and a harder finish.
- To achieve smoother brush strokes, using Tamiya Paint Retarder (item 87114) is recommended for optimal results.
