Historical Context
Tamiya acrylic paints are composed of water-soluble acrylic resins, making them suitable for both brush painting and airbrushing. These paints can be applied on styrene resins, Styrofoam, wood, and a variety of common model plastics. The paint offers excellent coverage, smooth flow, and easy blending. It can be removed with plain water before it cures.
When airbrushing, be sure to use any of the following Tamiya thinners:
- Airbrushing: Items-81020, 81030, 81040, 81520, 87077.
Tamiya bottle paint labels and practical tips include:
- Color Finish: Colors marked with X are glossy, whereas XF colors have a flat finish.
- Thinning: The paint can be thinned for airbrushing with Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinner.
- Flattening: Items 81521 and 81021 (Tamiya X-21 Flat Base) serve as a flattening agent. Mix any X-gloss color with the flat base at a 1:1 ratio.
- Faster Drying: Tamiya Lacquer Thinner can be used for quicker drying and a harder finish.
- Smoother Finish: To achieve a finer brushstroke finish, Tamiya Paint Retarder (item 87114) is recommended.
