Historical Context
Tamiya acrylic paints are composed of water-soluble acrylic resins, suitable for both brush painting and airbrushing. These paints can be effectively applied on styrene resins, Styrofoam, wood, and other typical model plastics. The paint delivers excellent coverage, flows effortlessly, and allows easy blending. Any paint prior to drying can be removed with regular water.
When airbrushing, ensure to use any of the following Tamiya thinners:
- Airbrushing: Items-81020, 81030, 81040, 81520, 87077.

- Glossy vs Flat Finish: X designated colors have a glossy finish, while XF colors are flat finish.
- Thinning for Airbrushing: Can be achieved using Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinner.
- Flattering: Items 81521 and 81021 (Tamiya X-21 Flat Base) can be utilized as a flattening agent on Tamiya Gloss paints. Mix the colors in a ratio of 1:1.
- Thinner Usage: Tamiya Lacquer Thinner can also be used for thinning, yielding quicker drying times and a tougher finish.
- Paint Retardation: Enhance brush results by using Tamiya Paint Retarder (item 87114) for a smoother, stroke-free finish.
